The importance of Health Screening

Health screenings are an important way to find medical conditions or disease early while they’re easier and less expensive for you, our patient.

Risk factors such as high cholesterol, blood pressure, or obesity are common. Screening tests may reveal risk factors. Understanding your risk factors for disease can help you make lifestyle changes to prevent the diseases they may lead to. Test results provide a track record of medical information. With a history of screening test results, we can track and own our health over time.

Pre-participation Screening

Pre-participation screening is used to identify people who may have unknown medical conditions which put them at a higher risk of adverse events during strenuous physical activities. At BFIT medical and sports clinic, we offer tailored pre-exercise screening for people who wish to embark on a new exercise program. This allows early detection of cardiorespiratory risk factors which may inadvertently lead to adverse events during the course of training.

Screening entails a detailed medical history, a general physical examination with special focus on cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal systems and point-of-care measurements including your blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation and electrocardiogram (ECG).

There are currently no guidelines as to when one should be screened prior to initiating an exercise program. However, for athletes hoping to start on competitive strength or endurance training, it is recommended to be screened at least 6 weeks prior to the start of your training program, so as to allow sufficient time for rehabilitation should it be required.
