What is viscosupplementation treatment?

Viscosupplementation is a potential treatment for people with osteoarthritis to help reduce pain, stiffness, and swelling symptoms. For people suffering from osteoarthritis, their cartilage caps break down and cause bones to scrape together abnormally, which causes pain in the form of stiffness or swelling; it can be frustrating because they cannot move without feeling immense discomfort.

What is the process of viscosupplement injection?

A local anesthetic will be first injected into the space around your knee joint; if you have excess fluid in your joint causing it to swell, the doctor will drain the fluids so you will not feel any pain or discomfort in the area during the treatment. Sometimes, the doctor will use an anesthetic spray instead.

The local anesthetic will help ensure you do not feel any pain during the injection. The doctor will then insert a needle into the space around your knee joint. Once the needle is in place, the doctor will inject the hyaluronic acid into the joint.

After the injection, you may be asked to remain in the office for a short period so the doctor can monitor your reaction to the injection. In most cases, however, you will be able to leave shortly after. You should avoid standing for long periods, excessive walking, jogging, or lifting heavy weights for at least 48 hours.

As with any medical procedure, there are risks involved with these injections, feel free to speak with our BFIT doctors to learn more and to to assess your suitability for such treatment.
